Home Buyers are Telling Builders to Go Big!

Gourmet kitchens, a spacious master bathroom, an outdoor covered patio: These are all must-haves for a great house in the Puget Sound region, according to the most active home builders on our annual list.

Home builders named those features as some of the most common requests when families are rattling off what they want in their future home.

Exactly half of the region’s busiest home builders — as ranked by the number of single-family homes built in 2014 — indicated buyers asked for large windows and exteriors and abundant kitchen cabinets.

Those could be reasons why 36 percent of our home builders said that the homes they build today are larger than what they were pre-recession.

We also asked these local builders what the average turnaround is on projects from groundbreaking to completion. On average, they finished their homes in just over seven months’ time. Projects ranged from about three months to one year.

In terms of the number of homes built, most of the area’s most active home builders experienced an upswing in the past five years, which is shown in the graphic above.
